Enchanted Evenings in
Krakow

Evening of Apr 29—Pierogies, 🎻
Highland Tunes & Kraków Nights
Well, Poland, you’ve swept us off our feet! After settling into Hotel Wielopole—
just a stones throw from the old town—we reconnected with our merry band
and set off with Katka for a first taste of Kraków. Rynek Główny—the enormous medieval heart of the city—welcomed us in full swing: street musicians, flower vendors, and cafés humming with chatter.
By sunset we found ourselves at Morskie Oko, a cozy lodge‑style restaurant evoking a mountain inn, where we enjoyed the most delicious salmon dinner garnished with roasted potatoes and shredded carrots—while serenaded by musicians playing authentic highlander tunes.
A leisurely stroll back through the twinkling market square sealed the evening, and now we’re tucking into bed. Poland’s captured our imaginations already—here’s to tomorrow’s discoveries!

Apr 30—Bugles, baguettes,
and a knight to remember
Ania, our local guide, takes us back to Rynek Główny, in the glow of morning light.
We meandered past the storied Jagiellonian University, paused into the coolness
of the Planty—where medieval walls were traded for a green ribbon circling the Old Town—
then climbed up to the historic castle district, where Wawel Castle and Cathedral stand proud. The highlight? The 14th century bedazzled St. Mary’s Basilica, a brick gothic church next to the main square. Here, at the top of the hour, a haunting bugle call echoes a 13th‑century hero, cut short by an arrow, and still played in his honor.
At lunchtime we keyed into local life at Bar Mleczny Górnik: retro, no frills, wallet-friendly traditional fare—definitely a one-time plunge. And just for laughs, Mark donned medieval garb in the square—our “knight” earned more euros than our crowns were worth!
This afternoon, we descended into the fascinating Rynek Underground Museum—a 700-year-old medieval market below the main square, complete with excavated stalls, foundations, cobblestones, and interactive holograms that bring Old Town to life. After resurfacing, we wandered to Kazimierz’s Plac Nowy—the Jewish Quarter—and queued up at the octagonal zapiekanka kiosks—choosing the busiest window was a no-brainer. Zapiekankas are open‑face baguettes and a beloved Polish street treat since the 70s—and yes, crowds know best!

Wieliczka—Worth its Salt

May 1—Salt, Sips, and Surprises
Taking our own path today, we traded the scheduled solemnity of Auschwitz (we have
previously visited concentration camps) for the underground wonder of the Wieliczka
Salt Mine. Descending 800 steps down into this underground wonder (thankfully, there’s an elevator up), we explored a maze of tunnels adorned with salt-carved chapels, statues, and even chandeliers—testaments to the miners' artistry and devotion. The highlight: St. Kinga’s Chapel, a vast underground sanctuary entirely sculpted from salt, including a replica of Da Vinci’s Last Supper and a statue of Pope John Paul II.
Back on the surface, we lunched al fresco at Bierhalle Kraków, savoring polish sausage and a burger complemented by a house-brewed beer and a spritz. A leisurely stroll through Planty Park followed, slipping in and out of the old town while making our own discoveries.
Enjoying happy hour drinks along the square later, one of us joked about tracking down Kraków’s legendary fire‑breathing dragon by the river—and, to our delight, not only did we spot its fiery show, but we also stumbled upon a vibrant food festival that that begged us to dip in and taste traditional Polish foods.
Having a cultural & culinary good time— 🐉 Mark and Becky
