City of Dragons

The dragon of Ljubljana is more than just a legend—

it is a guardian, a protector, and the eternal heart of a city that rose from a

folk tale about Jason and the Argonauts.

Morning of May 9
Where dragons roam 🐉

This morning, we made a lunch stop in Slovenia’s capital city, Ljubljana,

where we were welcomed by our local guide, Marijan. He led us through

this small city that blends Baroque and Art Nouveau styles under the

watchful eye of the lofty medieval Ljubljana Castle. Right away, Ljubljana’s playful touches caught our eyes: bee themed decor, dragons watching over bridges, and whimsical architectural flourishes adorning the building corners. The dragons stem from the ancient legend of Jason and the Argonauts, who, according to myth, slew a marsh dragon near the Ljubljanica River, and now symbolize the city’s strength, courage, and mythical heritage

Wandering past Ivan Vurnik’s colorful Vurnik House and Jože Plečnik’s symmetric Triple Bridge, we paused at the lively Open-Air Food Market, amused—but not tempted—to see Philly cheese steaks offered among other international options. (After all, we can get the real thing at home.) After sampling Carniolan sausages, we crafted our own lunch—choosing authentic Greek gyros before indulging in a creamy gelato.

Back through the streets to the central square—we were just in time to witness a spontaneous burst of patriotic song by a group of local men. It was a touching and unexpected farewell to this soulful city.

Breznia—Where Honey Meets Heritage

postcard lo res.jpg

Afternoon of May 9
Sweet connections  🍯

We just met Petra, a passionate Slovenian beekeeper, at the Anton Janša

Memorial Apiary in Breznica, named after Slovenia’s 18th-century bee-

keeping pioneer. With accordion music setting a joyful tone, Petra welcomed us into the world of the gentle Carniolan honey bees. The traditional Slovenian thatched roofed beehive hut has a hand painted front panel for each hive. Originally, these painted panels were believed to help bees find their way home, but as Petra explained with a smile, bees don't actually need them—it’s now a cherished tradition.

With accordion and song we were invited to taste a variety of honeys, each with its own distinct flavor and natural properties. From the delicate acacia honey, to the robust forest honey, the floral wildflower honey, and the slightly bitter chestnut honey, every sample told its own story. Petra shared insights into the fascinating life of bees—their roles within the hive, their communication methods, and the essential part they play in pollination and ecology. It’s more than just a tasting—it’s a journey into the vital work of one of the planet’s most important creatures.

Oh dear, don't say it, but our final destination is just a few minutes away.

Can it bee 🐝 that time already?

Help the honey bees!  May 20 is World Bee Daya perfect time to plant for bees. Include plants that bloom throughout the season for a constant supply of pollen and nectar for your humming visitors.  And then, buy your honey from your local beekeeper and reap the benefits!
