May 6—One night in the park—
the key to morning magic 🪄
We spent most of today traveling to Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s
largest and oldest park—home to a series of azure lakes and dramatic waterfalls. With an early morning start into Croatia, we arrived in time for for lunch at Restaurant Zlatne Gorice, a vineyard-side eatery near Varaždin. The vineyard views, the local wine, and the hearty regional dishes—all invigorating to weary travelers.
Once we arrived at Plitvice, Mark and I made a beeline to the far end of the park—rewarded with a lake shore waterfall view that whet our appetite for our next day's adventure. Then, back to our mid-century hotel—the only hotel in the park— for an included buffet dinner. Though dated, it’s convenient (especially for early starts), and one of our merry band mates jokingly dubbed it the ‘gulag’—and given the austere Soviet-era vibes of the region, it felt strangely fitting.
We're full of gulag jokes and waterfall bliss—with a spectacular wow!

May 7—Lakeside tranquility
to seaside charm
We kicked off our day with an early hotel breakfast before boarding an electric
tram into the heart of Plitvice Lakes National Park—Croatia’s natural
masterpiece of cascading waterfalls and turquoise lakes. Katka led us through the quieter Upper
Lakes first, a smart move that gave us peaceful paths and postcard-perfect views before the folks arrived from below. A silent electric boat ferried us across the tranquil Kozjak Lake, to continue our hike through the lower lakes region. Winding along wooden boardwalks over glassy waters and beside rushing falls, we were immersed in nature’s soundtrack—just birdsong, flowing water, and the frequent “wow.” After completing our walk, we took a moment to relax and enjoy a lunch snacks we brought along while our tour companions chose convenient options within the park. Ready to rest, we boarded the bus for the scenic ride to Rovinj.
Our driver, Gaspar, expertly navigated the winding switchbacks as the rugged landscape gave way to coastal views—and before long, the sparkling Adriatic began peeking through our windows. We paused for a break in the seaside town of Senj, where we stretched our legs, savored some gelato, and soaked up a welcome dose of sunshine along the waterfront. A perfect little stop on the way to Rovinj.
From Senj with a little gelato on our shirts—🍨 Mark and Becky
